The Chaileybrook flocks of Southdowns and Hampshire Downs are based in  Brook, Kent, and are run on a largely commercial basis with the aim of  producing breeding stock suited to both the pedigree and commercial  customer.

The flocks are run on an all grass farm by Jonathan Long, with help from his mother, Alex, and partner Chrissie Lawrence.

Breeding for commercial attributes is paramount to both flocks and a heavy  emphasis is placed upon ease of lambing and lamb thrift. Stock sires are selected for their fleshing qualities and ability to convert forage in  high quality meat with minimum supplementary feeding.

Both flocks have been successful in the show ring with the long established  Southdown flock enjoying major success in recent years, picking up three interbreed titles in five years at the South of England Show and  Chaileybrook 06/0002 being half of the Royal Show Interbreed Pairs  champion team in 2007

All sheep on the farm are MV Accredited and vaccinated against clostridial  diseases. The flocks are also footrot free after the disease was  eliminated from the farm a number of years ago.

Performance recording is also undertaken on both flocks with eight week and 21 week weights recorded and ultrasound scanning done at 21 weeks to ascertain  both muscle and fat depth for the calculation of EBVs.
